Lessons Learned 0: Introduction (Or What Is It All About)

"Lessons Learned" is a collection of small reports where we write about our project experiences. Who "we" are and what is this project about?

When I say "we", I am referring to me and my husband, Philippe, who happen to be in the same team (The Strineholms), working together in the project that is a part of the Project Methodology course from our university (Mälardalen Högskolan, Sweden). This course, which started in January 2018, is the fifth course in the Innovation and Design Master's Programme (that I am currently pursuing in the first year). Philippe decided to join me, even if he is studying Robotic Engineering at the same university, because he was interested in one of the challenges that were presented to us in the first day.

PROJECT METHODOLOGY

Before going to our team challenge, I would like to write some words about the course and it's learning outcomes. As you may already think, this course in Project Methodology is teaching us how to select, apply and integrate specific knowledge that will aid us throughout the process of planning, organising and executing a project. During the 6 months of this journey, an important part (I would say the most important one) is to include external partners in order to form a collaborative environment and to facilitate the co-creation.

We learn how to select and apply different forms and methods of project management, how to document the project development experiences, how to combine the theory and practice regarding project organisation and how to understand the collaboration, it's risks and opportunities.

All these together represent the reason behind the "Lessons Learned" blog post category.

LESSONS LEARNED

As project outcomes, there will be the project itself, that each group will develop until the end of May, one extensive project report, where we need to describe in detail our journey, following certain steps and discuss all the theory behind them, one journey video and one lessons learned report. In the last mentioned we present our experiences from a constructive perspective, where we show our abilities to understand the process and to the managemental circumstances.

OUR PROJECT

We started our project following the challenge presented by Volvo GTT which aimed to solve the autonomation problem in the loading and unloading systems. The initial idea was focused on inner city transportation, but the challenge has shifted towards something new, due to the change of industrial partners and we ended up by creating an universal modular in-truck system that can load, unload, move around and secure all types of cargo. The project outcomes consists of a video presentation, where we have used 3D models to visualise the system, a specification brochure where we present the technical perspective, and both digital and physical interactive models (the physical one has a scale of 1:80).

Following this post, the lessons that we’ve learned during this journey will be developed further in the Lessons Learned category.

We hope you will empathise with our experiences and you will use them in your own projects.
