Volvo Trucks Project

Volvo Trucks Project

EN:

I can just start this post by saying that the God’s ways are so tangled!

Who could ever imagine, in 2015 for example, when I was student in the second year of my Scenography Bachelors and preparing myself for traveling to the U.S. as an exchange student, that after 3 years, I will actually be part of an International Master Programme in Innovation and Design, working in a co-production project with Volvo Trucks.

It feels so crazy! I am an art based person, and even if I married a future engineer, I still cannot believe that I am currently involved in a project with the goal to create a truck that has full autonomous loading and unloading process. The thing is that I really enjoy what I am doing, and even if at the beginning I felt scared that some information might be overwhelming for me, now, after almost three months in this project, I can say that I learned many things about how to think as a innovation designer, related with this urban distribution.

But how did I get in this Volvo context? Everything started in January, when we began the forth course of this Programme, Project Management in Innovation and Design. During the first lecture, our teacher presented to us the course objectives and the companies that we can collaborate with. I have to specify that here at university, the teachers are really trying to provide us a broader perspective of how the outside world is, and we are working in almost every course with an external partner in order to gain as much knowledge as we can and to be prepared for our future jobs. So, for this course, there where 12 possible projects/challenges from several companies, that we could choose from.

My initial choice was to work with a project from a tourism agency, until I got home and I presented to Philippe the list of all the projects. For you who are reading for the first time my stories, Philippe is my husband and he is also a student here, but in the Robotics Engineer Programme (he is that guy who you are asking for any technological problem). Of course, for him, there was one project that sounded the most interesting, and I think it is easy for you to guess which it was. So, he applied for my course and after a week we started working together, for the first time, in a school project.

Since then, we have learned a lot of things working together, but this is another topic that I will save for a future blog post. But for now, from my perspective, this Volvo project is an unbelievable stage in my life, because I never thought that I can work with such an engineering company, after studying Arts. But nothing is impossible and what we are actually doing now is a combination of a lot of things; we aim to design a new truck system, which will be able to load and unload automatically, to make the life easier for the drivers in the distribution process. In order to do that, we need to understand the current situation from a holistically point of view, observing the processes, talking with the distribution companies, searching for the state of the art in this domain and being aware of all the unexpected situations that could happen.

It is a very interesting topic and I am so glad to be part of it. Of course, the fact that I have Philippe as a partner, it adds more energy and more fun to this project. Below is just a taste of the nice things that we are doing together. It is our vision video , that we have imagined, built, drawn, filmed and edited for our project. We hope you will enjoy it!

P.S.: I am taking credit for this video to post it here, but soon, there will be another section on this website, with all the projects that we have done together.

Toata povestea a pornit in ianuarie, cand am inceput al patrulea curs din programul de masterat, Management in Innovation and Design.
